James Wedzin

Tłı̨chǫ artist James Wedzin was born and raised on the shores of Great Slave Lake in what is now part of Behchokǫ̀, Northwest Territories.

James grew up watching his grandmother create intricate beadwork patterns to adorn traditional Tłı̨chǫ clothing. His grandmother inspired his initial interest in art, encouraging him to develop his artistic style. He was introduced to brush and paint in grade five, and his love of northern landscapes emerged. At age 14, he sold his first painting, and by 18, his artwork was consistently being purchased by corporations and private collectors. In 1999, James became a full-time artist. James was named the People’s Choice Award Winner at the 2023 Tłı̨chǫ Arts Holiday Showcase and Sale, making him the Tłı̨chǫ Arts Feature Artist for 2024.
