Ice Road, Whati & Hangames

Posted on February 24, 2014 | 0 Comments

I started off Sunday with a 160 km ice road trip to the Community of Whati, from Behchoko, Northwest Territories.  Whati is the third largest Tlicho Community, and they were holding their first annual handgame tournament.  Forty-two teams entered from across the Northwest Territories and northern Alberta.

I made it early enough to join people at the school gym for some traditional food before the handgames started.  The cooks and helpers did an amazing job, love oatmeal and caribou! After my amazing meal, I decided i needed to walk, and see the sites, and take some photos.  I made my way to the culture centre early and got myself a seat high up on in bleacher seats made for this tournament.

A wise decision, because the culture centre filled with people to see who would be the 1st place winner of the $20,000 cash prize! The handgames were exciting, and went late into the night.

I had such a great time.  I encourage people visiting in the Yellowknife area to visit the next handgame tournament in Behchoko on March 14, 15 & 16.  Masi (Thank you).
